Happy Graduation Szn!

So what's next? You.

To all the 2022 graduates out there of all ages, congrats! We did it! Through the aches, pains, stressors, mental health battles, financial woes, imposter syndrome, and so much more, we finally made it. So...now what?

Since my graduation from the SCSU Women's and Gender Studies master's program a few weeks ago, I've been in such a bittersweet state of mind. For one, I am happy and proud of myself for joining the 14% of Black students and 9% of Hispanic students to receive a master's. But many of us in the program, some womxn of color, some not, graduated with no job. What does this say about the education system and job market in 2022? It's trash.

In the midst of my job search for a main gig, I'm grateful to have streams of income carrying me throughout this phase. Wanting to feel a stronger sense of financial security, during a time in the world where so much havoc is happening (the pandemic, wars, inflation, mass shootings, etc) seems impossible. I can't help but think about how those of us who have graduated, since the c/o 2020, are stepping into a version of "the real world" no one of any age has ever seen before. Capitalism is still being prioritized, which we're seeing as grocery and gas prices continue to rise while everyone is trying to make a dollar stretch and remain at peace. So, again, what the hell is next? In the meantime, creativity.

Now more than ever, I've been inspired to chase after what truly brings me peace and happiness. Getting back into writing, blogging, content creating, skincare projects, and more has helped my creative juices flow. I've found throughout my experience that focusing too much on money and not enough on my passions has negatively affected my mental health. One of my good friends told me the other day that opportunities follow the humble and those who stay true to themselves. It might take a little bit longer, but I want to believe the journey will be worth it.

So if there's any advice I can give you graduates, it's to chase after yourself, not this world, not even money (bc it will find you if you go hard). Prioritize going to events that pique your interest, spending time with those who bring the best out of you, researching and practicing your craft and interests, and keep the faith that your goals will be manifested, because I will, too. Believe that the time and energy you spend trying to stay happy will add up to a good life. Your mental health and soul will thank you.

With love,

GF
