Halloween Haunts: 3 Spooky Reads I Read During Spooky Season

October is a month that holds a special place in my heart. Not only have the leaves begun to turn their beautiful assortment of oranges, yellows, and browns, but the weather is just breezy enough for a sweater. Whispers of Halloween costumes and scary movies start to fill the air, and people indulge in all types of spooky fall activities.

For me, October means I can set the mood with some spooky reads. Here are some that I think you should have on your TBR for the next spooky season!

  1. In My Dreams I Hold a Knife by Ashley Winstead

    ree

Jess, who is completely self absorbed and only cares about what people think of her which all stems from her need to be the best and gain acceptance from her father. Then you have her six college friends, Jack, Caro, Mint, Frankie, Coop and Courtney. It’s been 10 years since they all graduated — and in turn 10 years since the death of their friend Heather. Jack’s been framed, and Eric is hell bent on catching her sister’s killer.

I read this book in one day, that’s how good it was. This book uses flashbacks and first person story telling to put together this riveting who done it, and trust me, the killer is not who you think. This is definitely one of my favorites so far this year!

  1. The Party by Natasha Preston

    ree

A group of wealthy teenagers sneak off from school to a secluded castle for an exclusive party. A storm hits, and they find themselves trapped and hunted by a killer. As bodies begin to pile up, the teens must figure out who’s terrorizing them before it’s too late.

This is another book that I absolutely devoured. I rated this book a 5/5. I think that the setting and the execution of the overall idea was so strong that the surprise factor made me gasp out loud. It is important to note that this is a Young Adult thriller novel, so the book may lack a level of sophistication for some readers.

  1. When The Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy

    ree

One night Jess stumbles upon a little boy who is running away from his angry father… and when he finds them, things start to go awry. Jess is forced to go on the run in order to save her own life, along with this young boy that she’s found herself responsible for.

This is very reminiscent of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. This was a weird, twisted, bloody story and yet I was eager to devour each page. Cassidy has build out this world and plopped his readers right in the middle of it to come along for the ride. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Closing Remarks

Overall, I loooove me a spooky read. I think that everyone should challenge themselves to suspend their own disbelief and indulge in things that aren’t the norm. Thriller and horror are written in a way that can leave you feeling like you’re a detective on a ground breaking case.

Fall still has some more time to do what it does, so I’m sure I will continue to find more amazing spooky and sinister books that I can share with you all. Until then, happy reading!
