Meet Deja, founder of Deja's Daily Dose-"A self-love, confidence, motivation, and lifestyle blog geared towards others to become their best self."
Starting a business is never easy. Questions like how to market, fund, and grow one's business are just a few of the things entrepreneurs have to figure out. I got the opportunity to sit down with Deja and learn how she turned her daily blog into a social empire. Find out why Deja's Daily Dose is #TheMove in the social media world.
Deja Dodson, is a vibrant shy black girl hailing all the way from Prince George's (PG) County. She loves social media and has been the type to vlog and blog her day's activities. She started Deja's Daily Dose originally because she wanted to be a therapist.
"I started Deja's Daily Dose two weeks after graduation, so pre-college. I came to Hampton originally trying to be a therapist and do things like motivational speaking. I decided in this day and age with social media I should just start a blog," Deja said.
She did! You can view Deja's content right here and if reading isn't your thing check out her vlogs and TikToks! This is a woman who truly does it all.
Deja spoke about watching YouTube personalities as an adolescent and that was all the motivation she needed to start doing her own thing. At thirteen years old, she had started making content at school and during her free time to post on her channel. She reminisced on her First Day of Middle School vlogs along with other videos she made starting out. The Leo woman was definitely about her business and embracing her passions.
Some of her biggest struggles present day consist of comparison syndrome, which is something we probably have all experienced.
"One thing I'm really hard on myself about is the numbers and stuff. Sometimes, I look at other content creators and have that feeling of 'oh I want to be them', but we have to stay in our own lane. You can't compare your journey to someone else's!"
Deja's aim is to make content that pertains to her story. Whether it's being an older sibling, a curvier woman, the shy but loud womman, or an HBCU student, Deja wants those with the same stories to relate to her blogs and content in general.
She spoke on how she went from getting an affiliate position opportunity with Amazon to having her connections multiply.
"I'm producing sales and you can see I have some sort of influence."
She has been efficient in developing her brand to garner the attention of companies such as Shea Moisture and Samsung. Her success has been noticed to the point that other brands have even reached out to her through her dms or email!
Often, Deja finds herself working with these billion dollar companies to brainstorm content. But, every idea isn't always a hit. There have been a few times companies have told Deja a certain idea doesn't work for their target audience or wouldn't fit their brand. However, that has not stopped her progress nor her creative push!
She's already planning her goals and milestones for the future. Her short term goals consist of graduating, moving to a new city, and expanding her empire/brand. Next year she plans on hosting her own podcast and is excited to see what new doors it will open.
The life of an entrepreneur is not easy. Deja talked about the challenges she faces managing her time as a full time student and content creator/brand ambassador. She mentioned how she has to plan everything out almost to a tee.
"I definitely have moments where I'm begging and I'm like please can I have more time"
Overall, she understands that she has to get things done and is used to the grind. One of her most viral TikToks she filmed after coming home from a shift well passed midnight. She's kept up her progress ever since.
One thing Deja wants the world to know is that she is not as confident speaking in front of people compared to her lonesome room. She is social to a certain extent, but ultimately prefers her bed. She hasn't even been to a real club yet!
"I just want people to know that Deja is a fun loud ball of craziness. I think people think I'm stuck up when they see me, but when I talk I'm just like a 'Hey Girl' type of person."
Deja is very tuned in to other creatives around her. She admires her peer's work both at home in Maryland and in the Hampton area. She referenced Aaron Jordan as a DMV creative director she'd love to work with as well as Claude Robins who hosts a podcast on Hampton's campus.
For all the future creatives and entrepreneurs out there, Deja encourages you to stay in your lane and focus on your separate journey. Everyone's journey is not going to be the same. You get the best results when you focus on you Deja said.
" Find your lane and do donuts in it. People are going to pick you because of you!"
