The Station X Experimental Music
By: Simmy

Music is something that speaks to everyone in different ways. While music is something that is subjective, somehow it finds a way to bring everyone together. On the latest episode of the station, we discussed experimental music and some artists who have ventured into different genres and sounds.
The Station is a twitter space where we discuss everything music every Wednesday at 8PM EST.
Lets start with the definition of experimental music, “Experimental Music is a general label for any music that pushes existing boundaries and genre definitions, be it in rock, jazz, modern composition or any other style.” Many artists have pushed the envelope when it comes to coming out with a new sound.
Some of the Artist that were discussed as pioneers of experimenting with music over the last decade were Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, and Usher. Whether it is something that is calculated, or a trial of trying a new sound the result can be felt by those who listen to the music.
The staff talked about the difficulty or longing for new concepts in music. Most music that we hear on the radio could be considered repetitive due to what is popular or in the rotation. Another factor that plays a role in repetition in music is saturation, says The Station host and creator @smoovethesource.
The conversation led to talking about some of the newest artists this summer to put out experimental music, Drake and Beyoncé. Drake's new album, “Honestly Never Mind” and Beyoncé's new single “Break my soul” are perfect examples of what experimental music is.
Drake's album is something that not everyone is used to hearing from him before, but whether you love it or hate it; you cant deny that it resonates with everyone who listens. The project which is listed as a dance album appears to be inspired by house, amapiano, and electronic genres. While some are worried about how his music will impact hip hop, the station staff are enthusiastic to see how others are influenced by this sound.
What will music sound like in the next 2 years with the shift that we are seeing from some of our favorites is hard to tell right now. But it is definitely exciting to see what could be coming next.
Tune in to the station every Wednesday on twitter spaces at 8PM EST.
