This past week in college football the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Eagles took on the Campbell University (CU) Camels in Buies Creek, NC.

If you have had the opportunity to keep up with these teams’ individual seasons, then you would know this was going to be a good match up. This game was #TheMove for Saturday if you are close to or in the Durham area in North Carolina. With NCCU’s undefeated streak and CU’s caliber of players it was bound to be a great Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.

The game had an interesting start from the beginning. The kickoff had been scheduled for 6 p.m., but was rescheduled to 12 p.m. to avoid any chance of a clash with Hurricane Ian. Despite the weather and time change, the game still brought a crowd to admire.

This game proved to be different from the Eagles' past. They went the first quarter scoreless as opposed to the Camels who managed to grab 10 points early. The second quarter was just as difficult. The Camels managed to score several more touchdowns in the second quarter. It was as if the Eagles’ defense had no answer for the Big South Conference team.

The Eagles did score a touchdown thanks to a play from quarterback Davius Richard, but it was not enough. They finished the first half 34-6. As one may assume, the Eagle football team and fans were feeling the heat from the Camels.

The second half began and it was redemption time! The third quarter proved to be a much grittier game. Despite mistakes, both teams fought tooth and nail each possession. The competition was fierce and led to a scoreless third quarter. Maybe, just maybe the Eagles could come back.

The fourth quarter had plenty of energy as the urgency to win dawned on both teams especially NCCU. This quarter proved to have more action as both teams got a touchdown pretty early on in the quarter. But, the damage had already been done. As time continued it was clear who the victor would be. This did not stop NCCU from scoring another touchdown, but it was a little too late in this game.

The Eagles undefeated reign came to a close with the Camels. Unlike their conference mates, North Carolina A&T University, who played NCCU earlier in the year, CU was more than prepared. They had full control of this game early and stifled any prior life from the Eagles in this matchup. They closed the fourth quarter with 14 points in total. The final score was 48-18 (CU).

“They’re still number 1 in my book!”, NCCU football manager T’ona McBride stated in reference to the NCCU Eagles.

This week the Camels will be facing the Charleston Southern University Buccaneers at 4 p.m. while the Eagles will get a much needed bye week. Stay tuned for more college football moves!
